Family and friends of Logan graduate Kebret Tekle will gather tomorrow at the Greek Orthodox Church in Oakland to honor the memory and life of the Sacramento State student who was murdered in an errant drive-by shooting last week.

Tekle, 20, a 2004 Logan graduate, died Wednesday about 16 hours after she was shot in the neck while sitting in her car outside a Sacramento night club, according to a University Police press release.

According to the release, a fight inside the Library Eats and Drinks club on Folsom Boulevard, across the street from the California State University campus, escalated after two groups of suspected gang members were kicked out of the club and took their dispute to the street ouside.

Tekle was shot as she sat in her car outside the club at about 1 a.m. Wednesday. The bullet apparently was intended for someone else. She died died at 5:55 p.m. at UC Davis Medical Center on Wednesday.

Tekle, who was studying to be a journalist, was a sophomore at Sacramento State. She was a member of the Eta Lambda chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, a black sorority, and a committee chair for the National Pan-Hellenic Council.

At Logan, Tekle, a 2004 graduate, was a member of the Forensics team and the National Forensics League.

Forensics Coach Tommie Lindsey said today that she said she was "a really nice young lady who enjoyed being a part of the team. She had a sweet spirit about her. She was a huge people-person who enjoyed being around people and the class itself. She was a good performer in competitions. She had a lot of enthusiasm and energy, more than any of her fellow classmates. A lot of people wanted to be around her."

Senior Rick Streeter, a friend of Kebret and her family said the loss is "heartbreaking."

"I met Kebret my freshman year. She was a good friend to my and my sister," he said. "It's heartbreaking to have her go away like that."

At a showcase fundraiser for the Forensics team on Friday, team members and others held a moment of silense for their slain team mate.

Sacramento State President Alexander Gonzalez, in an open letter, said "I would like to express our shock and sadness about the shooting of one of our students earlier this morning near campus...Her friends and her professor are obviously deeply affected as well, and this is a time for the cmapus community to come together to support them. We are an extended, caring family that can be invaluable in the aftermath of such a tragedy."

The memorial service starts at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the Greek Orthodox Church located at 4700 Lincoln Ave, Oakland, CA 94602.

Police are looking for a suspect described as a 5-foot-7-inch man between 20 and 25, and was last seen wearing a jacket with a fur collar. "He may have been driving a four-door Sedan with no plates," according to the police press release stated.
