On Oct 17th, the president privately authorized an amendment to the Insurrection Act, which gave Bush the power to declare martial Law, in cases whereas,
"Under this act, the President may also deploy troops as a police force during a natural disaster, epidemic, serious public health emergency, terrorist attack, or other condition, when the President determines that the authorities of the state are incapable of maintaining public order.
The bill also modified Sec. 334 of the Insurrection Act, giving the President authority to order the dispersal of either insurgents or "Those obstructing the enforcement of the laws."
Is it just me, or is this fact eerily similar to England in the hit movie, "V for Vendetta"? In this classic, Britain falls to the tyranny of “the leader” as a result of public paranoia and the advent of power-giving laws. In London, the streets are filled with armed informers, ready military presence and broadcast screens, twisting the city into a Fascist state bereft of freedom, ruled by terror and silent stagnation. Who wants that, let alone a morbidly powerful tyrant?
Analyzing the amendment, it is easy to make a connection between this policy and the fall of Weimar, Germany’s short-lived republic system before the Nazi takeover. Take a look at its constitution:
Article 48
If a state (8) does not fulfill the obligations laid upon it by the Reich constitution or the Reich laws, the Reich President may use armed force to cause it to oblige.
In case public safety is seriously threatened or disturbed, the Reich President may take the measures necessary to reestablish law and order, if necessary using armed force. In the pursuit of this aim he may suspend the civil rights described in articles 114, 115, 117, 118, 123, 124 and 154, partially or entirely.
The Reich President has to inform Reichstag immediately about all measures undertaken which are based on paragraphs 1 and 2 of this article. The measures have to be suspended immediately if Reichstag demands so.
If danger is imminent, the state government may, for their specific territory, implement steps as described in paragraph 2. These steps have to be suspended if so demanded by the Reich President or the Reichstag.
Any learned sophomore in an American high school knows that one of the reasons why Weimar Germany fell to Hitler is because of a lack of checks and balances in its constitution. In both America now and Germany past, there is an apparent lack of clear definition as to "insurrection". In the context, the President may at his leisure order the nation guard upon any state for any number of reasons: enforcement of mandatory vaccinations, natural disaster, biological attacks, and guess what? Good ol’ all- American protests. Think about the culling in the movie, think about the lives lost and souls destroyed, think about the fingerman and the black baggers, and you may begin to see the horror of martial law.
And that is not all. Try to think past your short-span media memory. Remember the recent American violation of the Geneva conference? Well, it's legal now. The last line of the amendment allows the president to "disperse" foreigners "obstructing" American laws. This implies that the United States is now allowed to wrongfully imprison, question, and detain anyone deemed to be a terrorist, in effect repelling the deep-seated Posse Comitatus Act, which differentiated the colonies from the then military rampant England. Can you imagine the Evacuation Act again, this time on your unsuspecting neighbor, or even you?
Senator Patrick Leahy (VT-D) chooses to speak up against this, without Democratic Party or fellow senator support. Yet the media remains silent, leaving citizens to discover this fact by the word of mouth and underground newspapers- would it be too late? Would V have to don his mask once more as he rises from the ruins of Parliament, coming to America to save mankind
once more? I hope we have the sense to stop this conservative horror before it starts, strangle this evil in the cradle and embrace our true republic once more. We will not become another China, another Axis nation, or another terrorist group.
