The James Logan girls' basketball team was defeated by a very good Newark Memorial team on Friday. The game was competitive and no team had a greater lead than 6 points. The final score was 62-58.
-- The Lady Colts started off hot and scored 16 points in the first quarter which was more than they had scored in the entire first half of the Mission game. Logan dominated the quarter but Newark was able to consistently get offensive rebounds and put back points.
The second quarter was more of the same and Logan went into the half with a 32-30 lead. Erin Jones was commanding the boards and Kalene Correia was hitting the outside shot.
Coming out of the half, Logan transitioned to a zone and Newark adjusted and started to hit the 3 pointer. Newark ran a play where they ran their best shooting guard to the corner and she would hit that outside shot.
The Lady Colts played the 4th quarter from behind and tied it up at 49. Then the two teams traded shot for shot until Logan was forced to foul. They had a chance to tie it up at 61 with 10 seconds left, but the shot was off and Newark won.
The Lady Colts have had a rough start to league but they showed a lot of promise this game. Erin Jones had 17 points and 13 rebounds and Jasmine Reed had 7 points and two crucial steals off the bench.
Logan has dug itself a hole, but they can pull themselves out.
