An irate student allegedly assaulted James Logan teacher James Hansen during sixth period Monday, sending him to the hospital in an ambulance for treatment.

According to eyewitness accounts, Hansen, who teaches social science, was punched in the eye near the Meyers Lane gate when he tried to stop a student from leaving campus by closing the gate.

Jeilen Crespo, a student in teacher Shane Henderson's American Political Systems class, said Hansen came to the classroom for assistance after he was struck. Crespo said Hansen was bleeding from a wound above the eye, but was alert and able to recount what had happened.

He said Hansen told the class that he had been at the gate and had tried to close it to prevent a student from leaving, when the student started "calling me names" and then punched him about the left eye.

Help was called, Crespo said, and Hansen was taken away by ambulance for treatment.

Several students witnessed the attack, and were able to identify the student, according to reports to the Courier.

Further details were not available.
