From the New Haven E-News:
A teacher-led design team has submitted a proposal for the “pilot school-within-a-school” expected to open next fall at James Logan High School. The development stage is now under way, and members of the team will attend several after-school sessions over the next two months.
The after-school sessions, which began last week, are focused on preparing the team to submit a high-quality design, “the sessions will also function as a professional development series for Logan teachers who are not part of the design team,” reports Director of Secondary Leadership Joe Feldman. The sessions include discussions on school governance, decision-making, curriculum and instruction, community involvement, social and academic supports for students, and building professional learning communities.
Teachers outside the design team who attend at least four sessions will receive a small stipend, and District credit could be awarded, Mr. Feldman said. The next session, on “Curriculum and Instruction Development,” is Thursday (Nov. 5) from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Logan Reference Room. Future sessions include “Learning Community, Staff Recruitment, Professional Development, School Governance” on Nov. 12; and “School Community: Student Academic and Social, Emotional Supports, Parent and Community Involvement, Budget and Purchasing Plan” on Dec. 3. Draft proposals will be presented Dec. 15.
