By Jessica Stewart, Courier Editor-in-Chief

Last Friday, Logan’s new principal, Judy Billingsley, appeared on Logan Live for a special interview. I give her props for knowing plenty of information about the school, but that does not make up for the fact that she spent the whole interview deflecting blame onto other people and making herself seem great.

Don’t get me wrong, Billingsley could very well be great, I don’t know, but it annoyed me that she could sit there and praise herself while blaming the school’s problems on other people. She’s the new principal, for goodness sakes’, so she needs to admit to some of the mistakes and not go looking for scapegoats.

During the interview, she mentioned several times that she is new to the school, but that is no excuse. She was hired before the end of last year, and, in fact, visited the school before summer vacation started, so she had plenty of time to familiarize herself with the school and its issues.

For example, during the interview she was asked about the new lunch line system, which students have an issue with because having to go through two lines takes too long. She said, “I didn’t even know it was a new way because, me being new, I just assumed that’s the way it was all the time.” So, last year when she visited, she didn’t see the cafeteria during lunch time? Or did she see it and forget? I suppose this is possible, although rather unlikely since she visited during finals week, and the lunch lines were quite long because of the combined lunches. A long line simply is not forgotten easily, especially if it is a first impression, and one long line just does not look like two short lines combined. Besides this, since it is a new procedure, the school had to change some things up this year, and, since she was definitely the principal by the time Logan began preparing for the new school year this summer, Billingsley should have at least noticed the lunch people preparing for these new procedures. Things don’t just change automatically as we have observed this year. It’s very possible that Billingsley truly did not notice any shake-ups in the cafeteria, but what does that tell you about our new principal?

When asked why the counseling office doors were locked for so long, she gave a convoluted answer that simply did not make sense. She said, “Actually, because the master schedule, and we all know that it wasn’t the best schedule, there were certainly some challenges in regards to that schedule and we needed the counselors not to see students but to really work on the paper part of the master schedule and make changes and that was why, because it would have slowed down the process.” So the counselors were not allowed to see the students in order to change in the students’ schedules faster? Since when did that make sense? I believe she meant that the counselors needed to balance the schedules, because she then said, “My understanding is this has been the first time that Logan has done a balancing shuffle in September, it usually happens in October.” So, basically, in order to balance the classes early, counselors were not allowed to see the students with schedule problems. Is it just me, or does that sound like a bad idea? Because now, the classes are “balanced” but students with schedule problems are stuck in classes they do not want, because we are four weeks into the school year and to change classes now is academic suicide. Also, why is she glorifying the shuffle? Does she think it makes her look good that, despite the many issues with the master schedule, she was able to get the classes balanced one month early? Self-glorification just isn’t a pretty sight when the school is going through a crisis.

When asked about why the dress code seems to target mainly girls, Billingsley first passed the blame onto others, saying, “I think you’d probably have to ask the people that wrote the rules because it wasn’t any of us, we’re all new.” She then went on to say that females have more to cover up than males do. So it’s unacceptable for a girl to show a bit of shoulder behind a spaghetti strap, but it’s okay for a guy’s butt to be hanging out of his pants? Oh yeah, I forgot, his butt is covered by boxers, so it must be alright. Although, it does state in the student handbook that “undergarments are not to be visible” and that “the buttocks must be covered completely.” So why aren’t the guys being popped? Clearly it’s not the dress code that is targeting girls, it’s the administrators.

Billingsley also blamed, or should I say gave credit to, the front office for the stricter visitor policy, the district for not having our transcripts ready, last year’s administrators for the house family system and the fire marshal for closed but unlocked gates. All of this may be true, but passing the blame onto other people over and over again makes it seem like she cannot take responsibility for herself.

By the time the interview was finished, I came away thinking, wow, did she take responsibility for anything bad? Did she admit to any of the mistakes made since she became principal? All I could come up with is a solid no. I felt that Billingsley missed out on a chance to assure Logan students that, despite the numerous problems Logan has this year, there are people working very hard to fix them. And she missed a chance to say, yes, Logan administrators, as a group, have made some mistakes this year, but we are all human, and we have learned from our mistakes. As a Logan student, I was not reassured by the interview, just annoyed.

What Logan needs right now is not someone who will find scapegoats for every problem, we need someone to admit that, yes, there are problems, and that yes, there are people working their butts off to fix those problems. We don’t need someone who is going to talk around the issues, we deserve to know exactly what is going on. We need someone who glorifies the school and the people wearing themselves thin everyday to give us a good education, not someone who just glorifies themselves. And we need someone who is willing to take responsibility for both the bad things and the good things.

We need someone to be kind, be responsible, and be the best that they can be. I have faith in you. Ms. Billingsley, but the choice is yours.

i believe every wprd of this. i watched the interveiw and told my parents when i got home just how ba dit all is! my parents are NOT happy with Logan this year, and i's not only MY parents it's amolst ALL the students parents! something needs to be done and if ms. billingsley needs some help she should ask.

Wow, Jessica. I applaud you for your honest and bold opinion. I am also really amazed by what's happening at Logan. It's just too sad.

Posted by Carmen at Wednesday, October 01, 2008 13:08:53

Your editorial is written really well. Good job!

I agree that she has to start DOING something... I hope she realizes she is not making students happy and I hope she sees that many of us are patiently tolerating her (lack of) actions. And I totally agree with Alice's comment above. She should ask if she wants help and make us more happy. She shouldn't be so controlling of us and she needs to work harder. Us students and teachers work hard everyday and she shouldn't make it any more harder than it already is.

This. Is. Epic! Its all true, this was intesting to read! We shouldnt be blamed! Oh and yeah my mom doesnt like the new system either. ;D

ea i agree with you Jessica Mrs.Billingsley should be DOING about the problems and isssue and try to fix them instead of blaming us all the school and district and if she need help she should get it she not only ruining the school thats what all 5 or6 vice principal we have are there for i think we the students, teacher, parents that have probelms should tell her by writing or emailing, calling.

hahaha. oh man. well i believe that u SHOULDNT have written this, cuz mrs. b will read this and be disturbed, so will others . so please dont do this agen. its rude. she did blame others, but if u wanna complain, complain in private.. 2 URSELF.

Posted by malia at Wednesday, October 01, 2008 16:37:45

:To malia

I believe this section of the Courier is called the Opinion section, where students can express their opinions without fear of censorship. Sure Mrs. B will read this, but she really can't do anything about it. I totally agree with the article that changes need to be done. I believe Mrs. B has the potential to improve our school, but she has to take action now.

Posted by Loganer at Wednesday, October 01, 2008 17:57:06

If she can make all these mistakes because "she's new" the freshman should be able to pass 9th grade without doing any work because they're new to the school too.

The first amendment states free speech and press. This is exactly just that. Does that mean we shouldn't express our feelings just because others will be "disturbed" and "rude?" If we complain only to ourselves, where will we get anywhere in our lives? Just my two cents.

Oops, I meant to say:

how is this women going to come from a military school with a couple hundred students to LOGAN with about 4000 students and know what to do...honestly i kno students shouldn't have a lot of say in a new principal cuz hey wat do we all want as logan students (off campus lunch, less crowded classrooms, better parking, ETC.) but this is logan a school that is known more for our accomplishments then our faults that have tooken place in the past years...how is this lady going to come in and start puttin these ridiculous rules in order...the dress code??? i have never seen any girl go too far...at logan we r being taught to grown up not to be treated as if we r middle schoolers...this lady is takin things too far and if she doesnt realize now she never will...LOGAN IS A WHOLE OTHER DEFINITION IN ITSELF...WE ARE NOT ONLY STUDENTS WE ARE THE VOICE THAT CAN CHANGE THINGS...have we not realized that yet...we need a principla that knows how logan works...

This article could have been written much better.

"...she spent the whole interview deflecting blame onto other people and making herself seem great."

Make herself seem great in what way? Great in sports? Great at walking the dog? Or great as being the principal? That's extremely vague. It would have been better if you wrote:

"During the interview, the principal came off to be very pretentious, making it seem as if she thought she was overqualified for the job."

"Don’t get me wrong, Billingsley could very well be great, I don’t know..."

You're trying to persuade me to believe that the principal isn't coming up with solutions, but in this article you flat out say "I don't know"? What kind of authority do you have when you say "I don't know"? This phrase could have been better written as...

"It is possible that Billingsley's tenure as principal may have a positive effect on James Logan High School in the future..."

Hannigan, I know you have trouble even getting these students to write articles, but please edit them or have someone else edit them. Do you think a column like this would have been published in the Argus?

Posted by concerned reader at Thursday, October 02, 2008 12:35:47

ITS AN OPINION AND ITS NOT LIKE THE ARTICLE HAS TO BE ENTIRELY PERFECT. THE WAY SHE WRITES IS THE WAY SHE IS COMFORTABLE WRITING.

Posted by DON-T TRIP!! at Thursday, October 02, 2008 13:05:47

I have not had any direct interaction with Ms. Billingsley so will reserve opinion. "Concerned Reader" makes a valid point, a journal piece should be edited and not written so informally. However, you are a student and the point is to educate, not criticize.

I do appreciate your candidness and as an active parent of a JLHS student and graduate c/o 1987, will do my part to ensure that our students have qualified administrators and staff.

You guys are all saying that the new principal is blaming others.. but you guys are blaming her. What makes you different from her?

Posted by food for thought at Thursday, October 02, 2008 13:24:36

If you continue sitting around thinking she should do this, that, and everything else.. Why don't YOU do something about it?

Posted by food for thought at Thursday, October 02, 2008 13:28:02

To "concerned": If you want a better written article, why don't you take up jounalism, or better yet write something for the courier. Don't nag and complain about what someone is doing wrong, all while you stroke your ego and tell the author what you would've done. If it makes you feel better to critisize others and show how holier than thou you are, do it on your own blog.

Posted by Freshman...yay at Thursday, October 02, 2008 15:20:22

Uh, FoodforThought, the difference between being Principal and being a student are that one is give power to run school, and students are told what to do.

Get it?

Posted by The Goast of Things Passed at Thursday, October 02, 2008 16:18:07

@DON-T TRIP!!: So just because it's an opinion, it is exempt from criticism? A majority of novels published contain an opinion that the author is trying to get across, does that mean novels can't be criticized?

@ Freshman: First off, what is "critisize"? Second, you write "how holier than thou you are". Thou and you mean the same thing, so that phrase is redundant.

This is the comments section, I am free to express my opinions. Is there some secret rule that Hannigan imposed where readers can't help improve the writers' skills by pointing out what makes the article weak? I'm the consumer, the Courier is the producer, I'm allowed to demand better quality to the product.

I'm sorry, but I can't write anything for the Courier, I'm several years removed from high school. It worries me that students at my alma mater are tolerant of mediocre writing appearing on a website that thousands of people around the world access.

Posted by concerned reader at Thursday, October 02, 2008 17:01:13

Hey,

There's an old saying about freedom of the press. It's that freedom of the press belongs to those who own one, as in a printing press.

In this case, the freedom to have my comments presented here seems to belong to the person who runs the site and has the password to delete comments.

I would gess that if I wrote something that person didn't liek, and they felt like it, they could just push a button and delete it.

Posted by Dont- deleate me at Thursday, October 02, 2008 17:47:03

Concewrned Reader,

In your criticism post you say that the writer wrote
"Don’t get me wrong, Billingsley could very well be great, I don’t know..."

And then y6ou criticize the riter for not knowing.

That's the future tense, "could very well be great. " Are you say8ing that the writeer shouldhave said the she knows what the future will be? T

That don't make no sense!

Posted by Make Sense, Foo! at Thursday, October 02, 2008 17:51:53

Did you not read what I suggested could have replaced that phrase? If you need me to repeat it again:

"It is possible that Billingsley's tenure as principal may have a positive effect on James Logan High School in the future..."

I'm not predicting the future, I'm still giving the principal the benefit of the doubt. The difference is I'm not making my argument seem weak by saying the words "I don't know".

By the way, there is no 'w' in "concerned", or a '6' in "you", or an '8' in "saying". And what's a "riter"? Or a "writeer"? I can't take your argument seriously if you make up words.

Posted by concerned reader at Thursday, October 02, 2008 18:14:53

stfue! none of you know anything. this is the opinions section, only cuz u called it that. duh! so that means in class i can call the left side, the texting side, so everyone can text and thats ok! no. this isnt private. everyone sees it, anyone. so be polite. this counts 4 our schools reputaions, adn look now our school is knows 2 talk smack about our principal. wow, wut a nice school. s. i dont like a lot of things about the schoool either, but i say it in private. ok. like you lyv in private, etc. and carmen, how could u? s. i know you and you know me. fah!

Posted by malia at Thursday, October 02, 2008 18:21:08

JEEZ!!You people need a life and not worry about if there's a missing letter,if punctuation is off,and if an OPINION PIECE should be 'spoken in private' or not,if you CONSUMERS keep pumpin that haterade juice on the J.L.H.S. Courier, then here's a magically bright idea, STOP READING IT. Oh my gosh, what a concept! No one is headlocking you and forceing your eyes toward the computer. So go take some chill pills and call it a day commenters.
Anyways...
WAY TO GO JESSICA! YOUR ARTICLE IS THE SH*T!

Posted by Kay. at Thursday, October 02, 2008 18:40:12

I fail to see how you came to the conclusion that I don't have a life. It only takes me a minute or two to tell you that you spelled "forcing" wrong.

It seems as if the public school system has failed my generation.

Concerned Citizen,

Yeah, I see wat you meen. Somehow, even tho ur publically educated, you can't unnerstand what ev'ry o'er commenter here can.

It's been said more than once here that we should complain to ourselves, but what would that solve?

Jessica is not bashing on Billingsley by writing this article, she is simply pointing out some things that she could change in order to make the schoool more accepting toward her. I've heard many worse things from students, but that isn't going to help anyone. When people complain in private, rumors usually get started and then there will be much worse gossip going around. By writing this article, Jessica was able to express an opinion that she shares with many others about the interview Billingsley gave.

"We need someone to be kind, be responsible, and be the best that they can be. I have faith in you. Ms. Billingsley, but the choice is yours."

This is completely true, Billingsley should take some responsibility for what is going on at this school because even if she is new, she is the leader of our school. She is responsible for anything and everything that happens at Logan, that comes with the job.

We all know that Montoya left at a bad time with the changes being made around campus, and we know that Billingsley is not at fault for how all of the problems started, but she has to be able to take control now and tell us that she is working on the issues at hand without blaming everyone else for them.

Despite what many of the commenters are saying, if and when Billingsley reads this article, I hope she gets out of it that we are here to support her so long as she is willing to admit that she needs our support. Jessica did a great job at pointing out some of the issues Billingsley should work on, and how many of you can say you would be bold enough to do the same?

Thank you Jessica :]

The thing that everyone at Logan needs to realize is she's new she has no idea about Logan and jus Union City in general..the district made a huge mistake wen they chose Ms. B...but we have to live with this until they realize they made a mistake...(which will never happen)...there's no possible way she can know wat to do coming from where she came from...she mentions on the interview about if we have questions comments and concerns as students talk to cody...but talkin to this "cody" isnt goin to change things...when she came she first shouldve sat down with the students to hear their complaints and concerns...because who knows logan best? the STUDENTS...so i would like to see her get class representitives from all backgrounds NOT JUST ASB AND CLASS PRESIDENTS...and get their view of the campus and things that need to be changed...until then i refuse to give her the respect she wants...because of what i've seen and heard so far she isnt doing anythin that impresses me...sorry to those who want to praise her...but from the very moment the counseling doors were locked i knew she had no idea what she was doing...

Posted by realistic at Friday, October 03, 2008 08:30:05

Pippy is right you guys jessica in this article pointing out some things that she could change in order to make the schoool better which in which i agree but Mrs.illingsley should take some responsibility for what is going on at this school because even if she is new, she is the leader of our school. She is responsible for anything and everything that happens at Logan, that comes with the job and if she doesnt want to get help she should leave realistic i think the New Haven district made a huge mistake wen they chose her i under stand they want a strong admist but
what possible way she can know wat to do coming from a school with 300 to school with 3800 yeah she may have experience in Large school becuase she princpial of sac High with 2000 and Logan is double size and twice has many issues but hopefully she can get better
she new to Logan and this DIstrict so give her time guys.

I TOTALLY LOVE YOU JESSICA STEWART! I completely get where you're coming from & I'm sooo glad that you voiced not only yours but many of OUR opinions about this new system, as well. Seriously, the students thought for SO LONG that the counselors didn't want to see US but that's flat out inaccurate. That was HER choice.

I have total respect for her, but honestly, she came from a school with SO FEWWWW students compared to the 4000+ of us here.

I'm so glad you came out with this. Completely epic & I hope she takes it into experience.
