Lynne Thomson of Alvarado Middle School has been selected as the New Haven Unified School District’s Teacher of the Year for 2008-09, it was announced Tuesday night before the Board of Education. Sue Hollman of Barnard-White Middle School was named Classified Employee of the Year.
“Lynne Thomson and Sue Hollman are two tremendous examples of service to children and service to community,” Superintendent Dr. Pat Jaurequi said. “They are two wonderful representatives of so many of our employees, for whom public education isn’t just a job but a calling.”
Lynne Thomson, a second-generation New Haven educator, has taught sixth grade at Alvarado Middle for the past five years and has worked in the District for 27 years, having started at Alvarado Elementary. In recent years, she has found herself teaching the children of some of her former students. Her mother, Virginia Swihart, was a New Haven educator for more than 30 years.
Ms. Thomson fosters “a lifelong love of reading in her students,” Principal Yvonne Hull wrote in her nomination letter. “… even reluctant readers become involved and connect to the characters as Lynne facilitates discussions through questioning, partner sharing, journal responses and so on. Reading is a favorite classroom activity.”
Sue Hollman is the secretary at Barnard-White, where she has spent the past 17 years. A New Haven employee for 24 years, she “is involved in all aspects of the school program including school events, academic timelines, budget implementation, substitute support, teacher supplies, facilities and overall program support,” Principal Karen Saucedo wrote.
But Ms. Hollman’s contributions go beyond “her super efficiency, attention to detail and organizational skills,” Ms. Saucedo continued. Each December, she plans and runs an annual staff auction that this year raised more than $1,000 for charity. She also organizes, boxes and delivers clothing for Logan High’s annual Hopeconnections Winter Drive for underprivileged District families.
