
The following is a listing of current scholarship applications which are available for your pick-up in the Career Center. This list is intended to give you a brief synopsis of the most pertinent information for each scholarship or award. If a scholarship looks interesting to you, come to the career center to pick up a hardcopy application (located in the money box), or if a web address is provided apply on-line or down load your application using the stated web-site. Please note the deadlines, and that some scholarships target only a certain population.
Most of these scholarships are for seniors. Last year’s class of 2007 was awarded 127 private/corporate donor scholarships.
Occasionally I do receive scholarships for juniors, sophomores and freshmen as well. These will be duly noted at the end of this list.
Profile of the average scholarship recipient:
Grades? 3.0 and above
Community Service? 120 - 350 hrs. of DIFFERENT types of service
Work Experience? a definite plus
Leadership? a definite plus
Race? The Human Race (there is $ for EVERYONE)
SENIOR LISTINGS
Good Tidings Community Service Scholarship Deadline:11-09-07
Requirements include a completed application, 2 page essay about your community service, 1 letter of recommendation. (10 awards = $5,000 ea, and 10 awards = $2,500 ea)
Ron Brown Scholar Program Deadline:01-09-08
Eligibility includes US citizen or permanent resident, Black or African American, exhibit leadership, participate in community service activities, demonstrate financial need, and attend a 4 year college upon high school graduation. (10 awards = $40,000 ea) Candidates submitting their application before 11-01-07 will have their applications forwarded to a select group of additional scholarship providers.
The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in Calif. Deadline:01-11-08
Essay contest of approx. 500 words. Topic: “If You Were a Presidential Candidate, What Domestic Issue Would You Consider Most Important and What Would You Do About It?”
(prizes include a week in Washington D.C. and a $500 travel stipend)

Silicon Valley Engineering Scholarship Deadline:03-07-08

Strictly for high-achieving incoming students of San Jose State majoring in engineering or technology. These are merit based scholarships, so grades are a major factor.

Elks National Foundation Scholarships & Grants Deadline:varies
Five different scholarship categories:
1. Most Valuable Student - for all graduating seniors who are US citizens;
2. Legacy Awards - applicant must be a child or grandchild of a current Elk member;
3. Emergency Educational Grants - for seniors in a desperate financial situation;
4. Vocational Grant Program - for seniors pursuing their higher education at a vocational or technical school;
5. Undergraduate Scholarship Program for Students with Disabilities - the name of this scholarship says it all. (awards vary from $1,000 up to full 4 year paid tuitions)
American Architectural Foundation Deadline:12-7-07
For minority and or financially disadvantaged students who intend to pursue a professional degree in architecture.

The Santa Clara Valley Section of the Society of Women Engineers will be awarding scholarships to females interested in the field of engineering.

Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) Deadline:3-1-08

Fremont JACL Deadline:4-1-08
Applicant must be a member or the child of a member of this JACL chapter; with plans of attending a trade school, business college, university or any institution of higher learning in Fall 2008.
MetroPCS Deadline:11-29-07
For high school seniors with a 3.0 GPA (or better) who have demonstrated exceptional involvement in volunteerism and community service, and who will be attending a 2 or 4 yr. college upon graduation. (15 awards = $1,000 ea)
Sons of Italy Western Foundation Deadline:2-29-08
Three different scholarships, but all for seniors of Italian ancestry. There is an Italian Language Study Grant, an Athletic Scholarship, and an Academic Scholarship. (awards range from $500 - $5,000ea)

For seniors planning to attend a 2 or 4 year college as a full-time student in Fall ‘08. This is a SWEEPSTAKE type scholarship, so there are no GPA requirements and no essays to write. (30 awards = $1,000 ea)
California Association of Collectors Deadline:2-1-08
For all seniors continuing their education after high school at a college, university or trade school. Complete a 1 page application and write a 3-5 mins. (read) essay about the “Importance of Establishing & Maintaining Good Credit During Your College Years”. (3 awards = $1,500 - $2,500 ea)
McKelvey Foundation - Entrepreneurial Scholarship Deadline:1-15-08

For any graduating/university bound senior who has owned and operated their own business, with at least 1 employee. This scholarship is awarded solely on entrepreneurial spirit, academic achievements and/or financial need are not part of the decision. (100 awards = $10,000 per academic year for 4 years)
