Just days into her college career, former Courier Entertainment Editor Carmen Shiu, won a position as the co scene editor and online editor of the Chabot College newspaper, “The Spectator.”
Shiu was in the journalism class at Logan her senior year. She is currently enrolled at Chabot College in Hayward where she is taking journalism classes along with general education requirements. Shiu plans to stay at Chabot for the next two years.
Being an entertainment and a scene editor at Chabot is very similar to the Entertainment Editor's job at The Courier because the sections cover roughly the same topics. However, as online editor, her job is to transfer all the stories onto the website at Chabotspectator.com.
She said, “the difference between being in the Courier and the Spectator is that one is online but the other also goes on paper.”
Furthermore, the Spectator only runs weekly while the Courier is published daily.
“Being in Mr, Hannigan’s class last year has helped me improve my writing and gain experience, and it will all follow me throughout my career at Chabot,” said Shiu.
Courier faculty advisor Patrick Hannigan said that Shiu helped the online paper grow its readership.
"Carmen's work covering the entertainment world helped The Courier increase its readership by 1,000 percent last year," he said. "She wrote a lot of stories, and her stories are still among the most popular on The Courier's site. She has readers from around the world."
