The girls Varsity Water Polo team played their first game against Berkeley High School yesterday evening, starting of the season with a win of 9 to 1. The game began with Alyssa Stringer, number 7, winning her sprint, giving her team the advantage of getting the ball first. Evelyn Choy, number 8, went on to score three goals that quarter, with the Berkeley girls managing one goal.

The rest of the game continued in much of the same manner, with Stringer winning her remaining three sprints and Choy scoring two more goals for Logan. Alyssa Aiuto, number 9, also contributed greatly to the team. She scored three goals throughout the game and prevented the other team from scoring with her impenetrable defense.

As the final quarter drew to a close, Precious Perrin, number 4, had her own shining moment of the day. Having been kept from scoring most of the game by her defender, Perrin managed to break free and score the final goal of the game, bringing the final score from 8-1 to 9-1.

The girls were in high spirits after their exciting win.

“We definitely have a better chance than last year,” Perrin said after the game before heading off to a team meeting to celebrate the victory. “We’re communicating as a team and there are some amazing girls playing this year.”

The girls will be playing next Tuesday at Logan, hoping to add to their wins.

Boys Lose to Berkeley

Yesterday evening, the Varsity Boys Water Polo Team played Berkeley High, their first real game of the season. The first quarter set the tone for the rest of the game. After Andres Galvez, number 3, scored a goal, Berkeley rallied back with nine more of their own. The second quarter brightened Logan’s outlook, as the boys stepped up their game. Benjamin Hong, number 8, won his sprint in the second quarter, giving Logan a slight advantage. Galvez scored two more goals and Hong scored one of his own.

Third quarter proved even more destructive to Logan’s chance as one of their leading players, Phong Nguyen, number 4, was kicked out. Agitated by this, Nguyen re-entered the game and promptly scored on the other team.

Hong and Galvez scored a goal apiece in the final quarter of the game. The final goal was scored by Johnny Lo, number 21, bringing the final score to 9-24. The boys were disconcerted but their spirits were not trampled as Galvez proved by stated boldly “We’ll get them next time.”

The boys will be playing a scrimmage this afternoon and will have their next game on Tuesday, following the Varsity Girls.

I think the water polo team can go even farther this year and the years to come if some more freshmen and sophomores joined the team. From personal experience, these guys and girls are awesome people who love to include people in all activities.
