UNION CITY - A television show promoting healthy eating, starring Searles Elementary School students and videotaped with the assistance of James Logan High School students, will make its debut Friday night.
The first of five episodes of “HEART Smart Cooking With Kids,” produced by the New Haven Unified School District’s Health Education and Resource Team (HEART), will air at 6 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. Sunday on Comcast Channel 28 in Union City and Hayward. Ensuing episodes will air on Fridays and Sundays at the same times.
The show also can be seen on Channel 27 in Newark and Channel 29 in Fremont, on the same Friday/Sunday schedule.
The nutrition education/cooking show for children features students from teacher Vince Rosato's fifth-grade class at Searles Elementary. Students from Logan High teacher James Rardin’s Electronic Media Productions Academy videotaped two of the shows; the three others were shot at Comcast’s studio in Fremont, under the direction of producer Veronica Craven.
Four of the five episodes are hosted by Elsie Szeto, former Director of Nutrition and Food Services for the District. The other, produced in Spanish, is hosted by Luis Rodriquez, a nutrition student at the University of California, Berkeley.
The show was financed in part through a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Stamp Nutrition Education Program, and it was produced with the help of the Center for Weight and Health at UC-Berkeley.
“It was quite a collaborative effort … and quite a lot of fun,” said Lorrene Ritchie, a New Haven parent who serves as president of HEART.
“We have applied for grant money to do five more shows next year, with kids from Searles and Emanuele (Elementary) and should know if we will be funded by the end of the summer,” Mrs. Ritchie said.
Copies of the show will be distributed to the media centers at each of New Haven’s elementary schools. Recipes from the show will be posted on the HEART link of the Food Service page on the District website (www.nhusd.k12.ca.us).
