Logan Senior Anthony Orozco, who last weekend broke a 20-year-old school pole vaulting record, signed a letter-of-intent to attend California State University at Northridge Wednesday afternoon.

Orozco cleared 15 feet, three inches at Logan's Top 8 meet, held Friday and Saturday at Judsen Taylor Field, breaking the previous record set by Dean Starkey, a Logan student and former Olympian. Orozco finished third in the competition. Scott Roth won the event with a vault 16 feet, 10 inches.

Track Coach Lee Webb, in an annoucement of the signing, said Orozco's "family would like to thank everyone who has helped Anthony reach this goal for himself and his family. A special thanks to all his teachers and counselors over his past 12 years in New Haven Unified School Distict."

Orozco said he was "stunned" when he found he would be asked to attend Northridge, which will give him an athletic scholarship to cover half the cost of attending.
