In 2003, the band got their breakthrough with the two strong singles, Meant to Live and Dare You To Move. So far, that was pretty much the peak of their career. Three different singles were released after those and none of them charted as well. The first single, Oh! Gravity, was released in late October 2006, but has only managed to peak and chart at #36 in the US Modern Rock chart.
Oh! Gravity, is actually only one of the few better ones from this album. Along with catchy music, Switchfoot espouses the message of appeal for love, peace, and understanding within the generation. The chorus keeps the song together, turning it into a not-so-bad song.
The entire album features many questions and the songs are supposed to be meaningful with some sort of message. However, there are barely any solutions for the questions that surface. American Dream may be the only song that does that job.
Awakening has some depth to it when it comes to lyrics and sound. This potentially could be a good single that would chart at least fairly decently, possibly better than Oh! Gravity.
Another better track is 4:12, which is more of a mid- and up-tempo song. The only problem is that the chorus has some similarities with Lindsay Lohan's The Ultimate (yes, the Lindsay Lohan) from the Freaky Friday soundtrack. This song does bring something else to the table compared to the rest of the album, though. The lyrics to 4:12 question the meaning of life, as lead singer Jon Foreman sings, "And now you're wondering is peace just a temporary state."
Overall, Oh! Gravity is not too bad of an album. Fans of Switchfoot and their genre will more than likely enjoy this one. People who are giving them a listen for the first time, or exploring the genre for the first time, or who are giving them a listening after loving their biggest hits, might not fall in love easily with Oh!
Gravity.
However, it never hurts to give it a chance.
