On a weekend trip to Berkeley to visit some college friends at the UC campus, my friends and I stumbled upon a complete dessert gold mine; gelato to be exact. Two friends and I took BART all the way to the Downtown Berkeley stop, and met up with a friend who asked us what we wanted for dessert. It was around six in the evening, and we walked down Shattuck Avenue to a place called Gelato Milano.

Photo by Ann L. from Yelp.comWhen we stepped inside, I kept looking around at the interesting interior. The owner of the place posted up a sign saying that he was following a 'minimalist' concept. It was easy to see because the walls were white with no pictures or decorations whatsoever, and even though there were four tables with two chairs each at the back, it hardly looked like a comfortable lounging spot.
The interior definitely contrasted with the gelato, which was colorful and completely mesmerizing. One of the major upsides to this place were the free samples on delightful little neon spoons. There were only two employees, but both were extremely friendly and patient with us. The portions work like this : due (up to 2 flavors, for $3), tre (up to 3 flavors, for $4), and quattro (up to 4 flavors, for $5). This isn't like a Coldstone, however, the quattro size, which I ended up getting, is about the size of one measuring cup or a regular scoop at Baskin and Robbins.
As we walked down Shattuck Avenue, eating our gelato, we all wondered at how great it was. While the gelato was definitely smooth and creamy, most likely because it is made fresh every single day with ingredients from Seveso, Italy, it still managed to have an amazingly light taste. In terms of fat content, most of their gelato is actually less than eight percent fat.
All in all, if anyone ever decides to make a trip up to Berkeley, or plans on attending UC Berkeley as a student, I would definitely recommend Gelato Milano for some great desert!
